Cars are not just hardware now – they're highly complex interconnected systems driven by software. How do you visualise that?

Bosch Mobility Solutions is one of the largest companies in the automotive sector that you've never heard of. With billions of euros in turnover every year, they power a lot of the systems that make modern cars possible.

CHALLENGES

Translating highly technical documents to easy-to-understand visuals | Creating a coherent storytelling mechanic

Bosch Mobility Solutions is one of the largest companies in the automotive sector that you’ve never heard of. With billions of euros in turnover every year, they power a lot of the systems that make modern cars possible. In the past, what mattered was how big an engine was, or what kind of hardware was under the hood. Now, the biggest developments are happening where you can’t see them; inside computers, sensors, and in the cloud. This paradigm shift required a new design.

To be able to design for something, you need to understand what you’re designing for. Together with tech experts, we sat down to look at white papers to figure out how the systems fit together. After some doodles on paper, we started creating some sketches of what the software platform that is the beating digital heart of modern cars could look like.

Because a lot of this is used in CGI explainer videos, we needed to not just figure out the form, but also the material and how it behaves. What does third party software look like? And what about malware? How is interconnectivity and embedded software represented?

Once the look and feel for the new system was established, we could use it to tell stories. Because this was a B2B client, they assume a certain level of familiarity with the material. Mostly, our target audience knew about this technology already. We just needed to show: Bosch understands this stuff.
